Mr. Paul Corbin would never say he was famous.
He enjoyed working hard in his businesses but possibly
enjoyed his avocation more.
One friend called him the “Indiana Jones” of Southeast Missouri.
Paul spent much of his life discovering Native American artifacts
that were plentiful in our region.
He traveled to the American Southwest for digs and also spent a
lot of time at Wickliffe and (Illinois) digging up history.
One of his most important discoveries was the artifacts from the
Peter Bess settlement near Brownwood in southern Bollinger County.
These artifacts were showcased by Chapman in his
“Archeology of Missouri” book.
The Peter Bess settlement was the largest archeological dig in our area
and gave us a glimpse into the ceremonies of the early Missourians.
